It is very important for any motorist to carry emergency tools in his car which include jump cables. This will undoubtedly come in handy if you end up suddenly stuck in the center of the highway or parking lot having a dead battery. The most typical explanation why this comes in is when the headlights are not switched off. If you end up in this situation all you will need is a jump cable and a kind-hearted Samaritan to assist you.

In the event that you have these two factors working to your benefit, you should be able to quick start your automobile by attaching the jump cables to the car battery of your new-found buddy. To make it easier for you and the other car owner, it would be best if your jump cable is somewhere around 10 feet in length. Having the added bandwidth will make it a lot easier to attach the cables to both vehicles. You also must pay attention to small details before you establish full force into revving up your engine. One among the important things you need to do is to check that your batteries are not frozen. This is very significant considering that jump starting a frozen battery can cause an explosion.

You must also examine the battery terminals. If there are blue or green molds all over it, you must thoroughly clean it first using a wire brush. You may also consider buying new batteries once you have jump started your car. Incurring molds in your vehicle’s batteries is similar to keeping stale bread in your fridge-it must be thrown and replaced. The battery casing must also be crack-free. If there are, do not make an effort to ramp up your vehicle; the batteries are beyond saving and you would have to call any of the Portland auto repair shops to order a replacement.

You will have greater chances of jump starting your car’s battery if none of the above-mentioned scenarios are found. Take a look at the batteries once more for you to see the positive and negative terminals. In attaching the jump cables, the simple rule is to follow the polarity of the terminals. This means the positive charge have to be connected to another positive charge and the negative charge should be associated with the metal portion of the vehicle. The positive terminal is marked with a plus ( ) sign. Therefore, the uncovered portion of the battery will reveal the negative terminal that is corded by one black cable.

The engine ignitions of both automobiles have to be turned off before the jump cables are linked to the batteries. Then, you have to connect the jump cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery. After that, bring that same line of cable and put it to the positive terminal of the new battery. Then, clip the end of another cable to the negative terminal of the active battery. The tail of that cord should then be connected to any metal ground of the drained battery. Do not forget that we are not talking about the negative terminal of that battery. It is any unpainted and plain metal surface area near the dead battery. Bear in mind not to smoke while doing this.

The jump starting will have to begin the process by activating the engine of the ‘charged’ car. Wait around five minutes then start out the car with the dead batteries. If this does not get the job done, watch for a few seconds just before restarting the engine. If you still find nothing, might as well have your automobile towed and place an order for a brand new battery. If it starts, it follows that you are one lucky person. While attempting to keep both automobiles running, get rid of the jump cables in reverse order. You should begin with the grounded metal after which the negative terminal. After this you can now take away the cables joined to the positive terminal of the ‘charged’ automobile and then on to the positive terminal of the ‘drained’ car.

Last but not least, do remember to show your appreciation to the kind-hearted Samaritan who assisted you. Social graces would indicate that you invite the person for coffee to return the favor. He will possibly decline the offer however it would definitely be appreciated.
