I note that car dealers can run these Carfax type reports all the time for free. Does anyone know of any legit links I can follow to obtain a free Carfax type report on a used car I am thinking about. Everytime I look on the net, they ask close to ten bucks for a report, and I am sure there has to be a cheaper alternative…

  1. http://www.is-it-a-lemon.com/ provides limited services for free, but of course charges for a more in depth report. However, $10 would be worth it if you can avoid buying a lemon – especially with the hurricane last year and many cars potentially on the road from that and other disasters.

  2. Not free. Unless your DMV provides the info; mine doesn’t.

  3. I am not aware of any cheaper alternative- unless a dealer or Carfax wants do you a favor.

  4. Yes and no. YES… there is a way to check the hisrory of a car and NO… you can’t do it for free….

  5. Nope, no freebies.

Car dealers don’t get Carfax for free! They pay a substantial monthly subscription charge for unlimited access. They’ll often pull one for a car that you’re interested in buying from them without any charge to you, but they’re NOT free!
