SSI disability benefits are exempt from garnishment to satisfy consumer debt.
However, the auto finance company would have to take you to court first to get a civil judgment against you.
Although your SSI benefits are exempt, if you have money in the bank or own any other assets, those assets can be seized if they are not otherwise exempt by Californa law.

Sure, how else can they recoup the money owed to them?

No. But they can go to Court and get a lien against you.

SSI is not subject to garnishment. If you don’t work, you don’t HAVE wages. SSI is NOT wages. Your state does not matter. Federal law exempts SSI from garnishment.
