Helped sis get a car and it got repossessed. What would you do?
17th January 2011
So, I helped my irresponsible sister, who is 4 years older than me btw buy a car. Its under my name and she is the co-signer. I got a letter in the mail yesterday from the lein holder saying that the car had been repossessed and if I wanted it back I had to send 4 months of non-payment by 11/09. I tried to call her but no answer of course so I called the lein holder to see what the deal was. They said she hadn’t paid in 4 months and the car was taken a week ago on 10/15, so I’m pissed right! Well, she is on the phone with someone while I’m on the phone with that guy making the 2000 dollar payment and arranging to get the car back today. Should I say screw it and take the car away from her even if she gets mad to save my credit or should I let her try again. She is the most irresponsible of the family and she HAS done this before. I know I was dumb to help her but I could hear my mom yelling in my ear to help her, she was always bailing her out of stuff. What should I do, she won’t return my calls? Should I just go get the car from her?
Didn’t clarify myself right, she made the 00 payment, not me. Should I take it anyway and start the payments? I can make the payments no prob cuz I own my home and just paid off my truck last month!

I am all about helping family, but you can’t let them step on your toes what I would do is if she needs the car, I would make her make the payments to you and you make them to the bank, this way you know if they didnt get made and you take the car. Make her pay the money you had to pay to get the car back before signing over the title to her

This is an easy one. Make the back payments and keep the payments current (if you can). Keep the car and tell your sister that she can have it back when she reimburses you for the payments that you have made.

A few months of public transit will straighten her out, how can you even think of helping someone who does not bat an eye at taking your credit rating into the toilet and wont take your calls. Don’t be stupid and let others make you feel guilty, take the car and straighten things out with the lender. Look after yourself.

Lol. That’s a bummer. You figure if you’re making 4 months of payments instead of her, it’s in your name, and it’s your credit on the line, then it’s your car, especially if she won’t even pick up the phone to let you know that she’s missing the payments. In my opinion, you should keep the car for 4 months while she makes the payments, showing you that she can be responsible, and then let her have the car, but always keep some money on hand just in case she misses a payment. But make sure that if she does miss a payment, she lets you know so you can dig in, pay a month or two and have a car for however long you paid for. And maybe later down the road, switch it over to her name. Sounds like a plan to me. Lol.

All your doing is getting her the car back so she can use it for 4 more months with out paying for it. If the car is in her name you can’t go get it. You have two choices, keep paying for it or let the loan company have it. Your credit is already damaged.

she knows you all are suckers and that is why she lies and steals from you. your mom has taught her this and have supported her,,Why? Find a buyer for the car, she does`t pay the insurance either, you will get sued for all you got if she hurts someone. stop being her fool!!!! Let her by a cheap car at a "buy here pay here" car lot, they finance anybody. EDIT: SHE just took 2000 from some other sucker. 4 months and did not tell you! she is not to be trusted.as i said earlier how do you know she keeps her insuance? you need to have her insuance company to put you on the mailing list. if they can only send it to one address make it yours. or go online to her isurance policy and check it every month. your house may depend on it.
