I’ve been looking for a used car – small, 2 door cars in the -k range – for myself for the past couple of days, and I’ve noticed that alot of them that are in my price ranged have over 120k miles on them. How big of a deal is this?
So if the car has say….177k miles on it, but its been taken care of, its a good car for .2k?

  1. I have two cars with over 300,000 miles. Running perfectly fine.

Why are you bitching about 120,000 as if it’s high miles?

Miles don’t tell you ANYTHING AT ALL about actual condition of the car. All it tells you is that it went 120,000 miles.

It’s like saying I walk 2,000 miles in a year. What shape am I in? No way to tell.

  2. It’s not really a big deal. Many cars are designed to exceed 200K if properly taken care of. But as it has always been the case, buying a used car is buyer beware. You get what you pay for.

  3. high miles isn’t just the miles it depends on the age, typically the avg miles is 12,000-15,000 avg miles per year, all you do is divide the age (in years) it is into the miles, so for example the avg miles of a 5 year car with 50,000 miles is 10,000 per year (50,000/5)

120,000 miles isn’t high miles overall for a car but you have to look at the age, 120,000 miles on a 10 year old car is about avg because thats 12,000 miles on avg per year, but if its 120,000 miles on a 6 year old car then thats 20,000 miles on avg per year which is high for the age

so all in all, its not just the miles, its the age with the miles that determines if it has high miles or not, just remember (miles/age in years = avg miles per year)

  4. If its a diesel car, then mileage is totally irrelevant. With a gas car, you have to do your homework on that specific car: check the Carfax, the KBB reviews on that year/make/model, are there receipts to prove it has regular maintenance, etc. Also, make sure you take it to a trusted mechanic.

  5. my opionion is thats tooo high of mileage for that kind of money unless its a honda or toyota those cars will go 250 300,000 miles if you take real good care of them , it will cost yu all that 5,000 to buy one too , before you buy ask for carfax or run it yurself and have an mechanic checke it out , thats a lot of money these days ,, just my 2 cents

  6. I drove for your favorite Uncle Sam for a ton of years, doing 100,000 miles a year, and getting a new car every two years. Two hundred thousand miles is now considered a lot of miles on a car, but 100,000 isn’t. I bought a couple of my turned-in cars and gave them to friends, and the oldest now is around 290,000 and just started burning a little oil…. This especially true if your not a person who does 25,000 a year….

  7. Depends on what kind of cars mostly and if they have been beat on or not. You could get an Integra with 120k miles on it and it will go alot further than that if taken care of like up to 300k. If your looking at an american car with 120k miles then it wont last 2 much longer. Well thats what i got out of the cars ive owned and i have taken good care of each and every one

  8. That’s not that bad. The lower the millage the more it’s going to cost. Have some one check it out for you. A car fax is a big joke on cars.

  9. I drive a 1993 mercedes 300e 2.8L..The car has about 103k miles on it, which is not a lot for a 16 almost 17 year old car, but the car has hardly had any problems at all and still runs great. 120k miles is not a big deal for many cars. But some cars can have major problems well before 120k miles.
Like a mercedes, BMW, lexus, etc will all last 300,000 + miles with few problems.
Also a big factor in how long a car will last is the cars bore/stroke ratio. If the bore is higher than the stroke it is considered an "oversquare" engine. These engines usually have less friction in them, which causes the engine to last longer in the car.

Just before you buy a certain car, be sure to do a lot of research on it. Make sure it is everything you are looking for..
But honestly 120k miles should not be a big deal at all on most cars. You may have some small problems with cars with high miles (what do you expect, all engines will wear out after too long) but yes 120k is fine.

Oh and by the way. In my opinion inline engines last longer than a typical V engine. Inline engines also run a lot smoother than a V engine.

Do research on the engines some of the cars your looking to buy, and maybe you can find out more about it.

    Hope this helps you!
