I’m trying to purchase a used car but the dealer is over an hour away from my home and regular mechanic. What can I do to get this car checked out? The carfax police report said it was involved in a minor acident but the car now looks immaculate. Do I have to find a place near the dealer to do this? I’m just worrid as a non regular they won’t take the same care at looking at this car as my regular mechanic would. Please help.

  1. Since you found a car 60 miles away you’ll have to deal with the distance.

Ask the seller if you can take the car for a half day and have your personal mechanic check it out. Arrange an appointment with your mechanic and take it in and sit and wait for him to finish the inspection. A good mechanic shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes to perform this service.

If the seller says no then don’t buy his car. Walk away and find another car closer to home.

I’m confused when you say "police report". What do the cops have to do with this? Carfax is not run by law enforcement. It’s an independent reporting agency.

  2. Many serious sellers would not object to you taking it to your own mechanic.

Offer to give them some gas money if you don’t buy it and don’t be gone more than 3 hours. (Make sure your guy can look at it as soon as you get there)
