How do I get a used car home (without towing)?
28th October 2010
I’m looking to buy a used car but most of the cars i’m interested in are about an hour away from my house. It would be from a private seller, not a dealer. So, what would I do about the license plates. (I don’t have a car so now I couldn’t put my plates on it)

You can go to the dmv and get a temp tag, but you should call first and ask what information that your local dmv will require.

Most people drive them home. Its easier than pushing it.
In many states, a buyer has 10 days to drive a used car without a tag.
However, insurance is required.

You drive it. It is prefectly legal to drive home a car that you just bought. All you need is a paper tag in the window that say "tags applid for" and the documentation in the car proving you just purchased it.
You’ll have 3 days to get tags and get the car registered.
Insurance is a different situation completely. You MUST have valid insurance if you intend to drive the car more than 20 feet. So on the day you buy the car you must have an insurance policy before you can take delivery of the car.

you can get a plate at the notary when the seller transfers the title to your name, just make sure you insure the car before driving it.
