How do you get a bad smell out of a used car?
13th March 2010
I got a "new" used car, and it has this musky smell to it. What are some good ways of getting rid of the smell, and not just covering it up.
Like I dont want to scrub it from top to bottum, I just want to get rid of the smell and not use fresheners.

if you really want to get a smell out
take out the front seats (4 bolts for each seat)
then clean the seats and clean under the seats
get some household carpet deodorizer and let it soak into the car’s carpet for a lil bit and if you have a carpet cleaner, you can use that as well.
Depending on what is actually causing the smell, that should work

you need to find the smell first in it,,it may be old wet carpet that your smelling,,and it can mold on you,,id find it,,then deal with it,your probably going to have to clean it real good though,,to get rid of it,,or have it cleaned really good ,some smells don’t go away that easy,,good luck with it,buy lots of air fresheners ,,i hope this help,s.

Febreeze works wonders… also time. My car smelled horrible when I bought it and I just tried my best with the Febreeze and airing it out and now it doesn’t smell at all. Febreeze truly works wonders!

Have it detailed, I have my truck detailed every six months and I’m allways amazed at the results. Do some homework on the detailer, some just mask over smells with stroger stink. Have seen some spray paint the carpet rather than remove stains.
I used to haul fish in a van trailer and the best thing to get rid of the fish smell was coffee grounds, allways had a can of perc coffee in the cab for when a customer didn’t like the fish smell.

The best way to get rid of a musty smell is to use baking soda. Sprinkle it all through the car, keep the windows closed and after a few hours vaccum. It should smell better then, If not, redo it.And take the seats out and see if there is mold under them. If so wash with vinegar and when dry put soda there and leave it.

Exactly what Mister said. Plus I have had good results soaking the seats & carpet with Lysol spray cans after cleaning them, and letting them sit out in the sun for a couple days.
Worked miracles when I used to puke in my Monte Carlo in college.
Cigarette smoke, however, will be there forever unless you totally replace the interior.

I sell used cars for a living…..here is what you do. First make sure there is no moisture in the car. Alot of dealers have their cars detailed and the foolish people at the detail shop let it dry with the windows up which causes a really bad smell. If it is wet…..steam clean the carpet to get the old water out that couldn’t evaporate……..If it is dry and not a mold smell……..buy a package of charcoal and open it up…..put it in the trunk. It will absorb ALL of the nasty odor. Thank me later….it really works.

Best way I ever seen was Steam the Foam. It will make them like new, remove any odors from the foam and fabric. Then steam the carpets, same effect. It renews the fiber and removes any odor. If the seats are Vynal, pull them out, carefully pull the vynal away from the foam, then steam. If there are Listing Rods or Wires, well there arent many any more and if there are they are usually Velcroed in. Let it air dry out for 8 hours or so. enjoy.

Take it to a larger dealership and have it ozoned. i had it done to a brand new car that smelled like something died in it, and now the smell is gone.

Someone else suggested charcoal. Exactly the best solution. The best and easiest is a product that I love and works really really well. It actually does what it says it will do. The product is called fridge-It odor absorber. Put a couple in your car. Totally fragrance free and actually gets rid of the odors instead of those horrible scented fresheners. Make sure to also put in your trunk. There are some other charcoal products that don’t seem to work as well and have lots of little pieces.
Try kitchen department at Walmart or linens and things.
