Can’t really put an exact figure on that due to the nature of auctions. However, I’d say it’s going to be less…and that might STILL be too much!
Understand that auto auctions are far too often the place that "undesirable" vehicles go. That ’87 Ford Piecer your buddy traded in for a new car last week? Unless it’s pristine and low mileage, the dealership won’t turn around and put it on their "pre-owned" lot, they’ll send it off to auction and get whatever they can out of it. Almost all of the fly-by-night used car dealerships you see get their cars from auctions, so that should tell you something!
Bear that in mind should you decide to go the auction route.

it a place for where "undesirable" vehicles go, read source before you buy a vehicle from an auction, it’ll help protect you! If you still wanted to get a vehicle from an auction, get everything they say in writing or bring a tape recorder, people there tend to lies! Be sure the title is clear and dont give them your ID or let them force you into signing anything you dont agree on, you have rights!
From site:
Wholesale Auto Auctions (Usually dealer to dealer type auctions)
Public Auto Auctions (Open to any sucker. Oops, I meant consumer).
Police Auctions & Government Auctions (Usually open to anyone)
Insurance Auto Auctions & Salvage Auto Auctions (Usually open to only to dealers)"

a 8000 car at a dealership will cost about 3-4k at an auction
but it really depends on the market and condition of the car
