How much tax do I have to pay on a used car?
24th August 2010
I am planning to buy a used car, can anyone tell me how much tax I will have to pay on it? I know that if it is bought from a private seller, there won’t be any taxes, but if I buy it from a car dealership, will I have to pay GST + PST, or just one of them?
I’m in Manitoba, Canada

If you buy it privately, you only pay the PST. If you buy it from a dealer, you pay both taxes.
However, if you are trading in a vehicle, you only pay tax on the difference of the two amounts.
Sorry, I should add I’m in On. I would assume the tax laws are the same in Man. but I could be mistaken.
