I bought a car from a used car dealer, with finance from Santander (so not a dodgy deal) six weeks ago. When I bought it the car sales man told me I have 3 months warranty, but the only paper work I have is from the credit provider, so I have no proof of what he has said. The brakes are grinding, and I wondered if they would be liable as I have only done about 120 miles in the car.

  1. Normally brakes are not under warranty, but being you bought the car 6 weeks ago from a reputable dealer, they make offer to fix them for you. It cant hurt to ask. But mind you, they will just put pads on it for you. The right way is to replace or resurface the rotors because the pads have hit the rotors causing the grinding sound. See if you can work out a deal. You pay for new rotors and they install the rotors and pads for you for free?
    It cant hurt.

    good luck……..

  2. If the brakes are grinding because something has worn out like the pads or discs that will not be covered on the warranty.
Lots of car dealers give an informal 3 month warranty on used cars and that will be for mechanical and electrical defects but not ones caused by something that naturally wears out like brake components, clutches, bulbs, spark plugs, filters etc.
Until you know what the problem is you will not know what they will do. A polite approach to the dealer will be the best starting point – do not go in with guns blazing.

  3. Sorry but no warranty company covers brake parts as they are classed as wear and tear items.
I recon all you need is to get the brake pads replaced for as little a £25.00.

The small print of the document should tell you what is covered, you will find Brakes, Clutches, slave cylinders and not covered. However sometimes they might do a good will gesture and replace the faulty parts.

  4. Warranty doesn’t cover what they call "wear and tear" so things like brake pads, brake discs, tyres, don’t get included.

At 120miles fI’d take the car back to the dealership and explain about the grinding brakes and see what they say. I’d also ask for details of the warranty lasting 3 months to be put in writing from the dealership to back up their claim – when I bought my car from a dealership on the purchase receipt across the bottom it gave me a warranty lasting 12 months and it gave the start and finish date.
