  1. Usually $50-$80.
Gomer’s business is a good deal if it is a thorough inspection.

  2. A thorough pre-purchase inspection should take about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to perform. The charges are all labor since they aren’t "fixing" anything. Based on the standard mechanic labor rates in your area it could cost anywhere from $50 to $150 for the inspection. If you take it to a dealer they will charge you more simply because they charge higher labor rates.

My mechanic charges $65 an hour for his labor and I’ve paid him as little as $100 and as much as $140 for this service. It’s money well spent.

The inspection really isn’t to tell you about future problems. Nobody can predict the future and this isn’t a gaurantee you won’t have mechanical issues down the road. All they can do it tell you the condition the car is in today. They can tell if acar has been well maintained or abused or ignored. They can look at the brakes, test the trans, make sure the A/C is working properly and tell you if the major components are showing signs of abnormal wear. They should check the timing belt. They will inspect the suspension, the chassis, the exhaust system. They look at the wheels and tires, check for signs of poor repairs or hidden problems like rust or bad body repairs.

A mechanic who spends their lives underneath a car can see things we’d overlook easily.
