How To Avoid A Car Accident
6th November 2010
Automobile accidents happen daily, but they are still an unexpected shock for those involved. Every time we use the highway there is the chance that we or someone else will make a driving error resulting in vehicle damage, or even injury and loss of life. These events usually make us stop and consider our own driving habits. If you have had a car accident Albuquerque, perhaps you are still trying to figure out how it could have been prevented, or how to stop something similar from happening again.
Nearly all accidents have one factor in common, and that is driver error. Even an experienced people do not always make the best decisions. It is true that some incidents cannot be avoided because they occur so suddenly. A deer may leap across a dark highway directly in front of the car, leaving no opportunity to stop in time. Another vehicle may careen into your lane on the freeway, causing a chain reaction that might involve several cars.
There are ways to avoid making the wrong choices while driving. Most of the time this doesn’t actually require learning a new skill, but rather un-learning bad driving habits. Accident prevent methods are relatively simple, and easy to adopt. While they do require a little conscious thought, over time they become ingrained, and can prevent the horrible sound of metal collapsing into metal during a crash.
Number one on this list is distraction, which can come in many forms. At normal highway speeds a car can travel many hundreds of feet in only a few seconds, and most people simply aren’t aware how little time it takes to lose control. Distractions compromise attention, hand control and eye directions. Most people would not trust their lives to a surgeon with a reputation for not paying close attention during operating procedures. Driving while distracted can have similar fatal results.
Leading the list of avoidable distractions are cell phones. It is nearly impossible to dial or text without looking directly at the phone, even if you excel in dexterity. Using a hands-free device can help, but doesn’t really solve the problem of distraction. Then there are those people who are chronically behind schedule, and routinely use the car as an extension of the bathroom. We’ve all seen drivers shaving, or trying to apply mascara in the middle of traffic. Good grooming in this case can land someone in the emergency room.
Then there are the everyday diversions, such as changing a radio station, or trying to make the children stop fighting and screaming in the back seat. Driving reactions may be affected even by a heated conversation. We’ve all seen people reading books or newspapers in slow-moving traffic jams, and while that may alleviate boredom, it can lead to a fender-bender. In addition, most of us have dropped an object that lodges inconveniently under the seat. This usually results in dangerous swerving while we attempt to retrieve it.
How many times have you used your knees to steer, while doing something else with your hands? multitasking may be a useful skill in the office, but not on the highway. These distractions take away one of the most important safety tools, and that is defensive driving. This skill is taught in driver education courses, and basically means learning to anticipate and deal correctly with dangerous situations, such as bad weather or other reckless drivers. Sometimes it is hard to remember that operating a vehicle is not a contest, and trying to prove you have the right-of-way by barreling through an intersection may be the last thing you remember.
Sometimes, however, the most careful and defensive driver can have a car accident Albuquerque. These events are sometimes unavoidable if the other involved party has decided to drink and drive, or chooses to vent anger and frustration with his vehicle. When a crash happens, make sure the passengers are all right, and try to move off the road if possible. Try to exchange insurance information if the incident is not too serious, and remember that driving without insurance is against the law. Never sign any document while still under the immediate stress of a crash. Accidents can be expensive and traumatic, but can be greatly reduced by not driving while distracted.
