I am working p/t and trying to struggle my way through college and saving some money on the side. I like selling things to make profit, what do I need to become a used car dealer ? I know I will have to rent a little parking lot or something and have the funds to buy some used cars to start but how can I get the used car plates, licenses and stuff ? Thanks!

  1. In Texas you have to have to be bonded and apply for a license with the state, establish a place of business with signage with hours of operation posted. Apply and set up a state and local tax license. Off the top of my head these days I’d guess starting out cold a license would would cost 22 – 25 K. I parked mine with a friend of mine and run a couple of cars a year through it and keep dealer tags on my own cars.

  2. in order to get a dealers license you already have to have a place to sell the cars at. Next you have to get bonded and register at the auction houses

  3. You will have to meet all the requirements in place where ever you are, which you didn’t mention.

Generally you need a piece of commercial property with an office at the very least.
