  1. Scooters are a great $1K or less option too IF you’re in a scooter friendly town (i.e. ATX). I would start with Craigs

  5. @smashysmashy Yeah, auctions work too, but you buy the car as it is. If it’s messed up you can’t take it back. I’d rather do the craiglist, and bring a certified mechanic ( Charge about 50 to 100 bucks. Free sometimes if he’s a family member and you know him. ) to inspect it first before you buy it. If the owner doesn’t agree to a mechanic to inspect it before buying, he’s probably trying to rip you off.

  6. How to Buy a Car For Under 1,000? Don’t ever buy a car for under 1000 dollars. It’s going to have ALOT of problems. Buy a car for atleast 2000+. For 3, 4, or 5k+ cars, you’re going to get a good quality car.

  14. This is common sense knowledge for anyone using the internet. But for those that don’t browse the internet regularly will probably never heard of craigslist or ebay. But beware, there’s a lot of scam in craigslist.

  17. Good advice here…. my father and I made a boat loads of money buying vw bugs back in the day. Didn’t matter if they had dents in the fenders etc. Fenders were under $50 each, bumpers $35 seat covers that looked original (slipped over the old seats and zipped underneath) Front and back $75. A day sanding and pimer, paint booth rental $65, paint, done! We could flip a bug in 7 days and sell it for $2500. About $1500 profit…then bugs went and got popular! Then you couldn’t buy them cheap.

  18. Used car dealership in-house financing with high interest (10-12% or more) can be a rip-off, and targeted towards those with poor credit and income. The interest on these loans is ridicuolus.

Better to spend $1K on a beater that looks ugly and runs ok until your income and credit improves. It’s not worth spending 80% of your paycheck on a car loan and insurance like many people do..
