How to check if a used car is mechanically sound?
17th July 2011
I’m looking for a used car that is not more than 12 years old. I know to look under the hood, but I don’t know what I am looking at. I know to check the vin number at carfax, but if there is anything else I should know about that, tell me. Also, tires, A/C, details, etc…

You can rely on reputation, for the most part. Many cars, like Toyota and Honda, have great reputations. Go to NHTSA web-site and watch for recall histories on each car choice you make. Start here, but back it up with a TOTAL examination. Watch for leaking seals, rust in the chassis or suspension, unusual tire tread wear patterns. Have the brakes examined for wear on rotors and pads. Have the exhaust system checked for leaks or signs of de-composition. Remove the oil filler cap on the engine, and flip it over. If there is a dark coating or chocolate cookie-like powder on it, the whole inside of the engine will look like this, too. This indicates previous owner negligence or stupidity in oil choices. This can be remedied, though, with a good engine flush and better oil choices. Check the brake fluid reservoir. If the fluid is dark, it should be changed. Good fluid is transparent, clear or light yellow. Dark fluid indicates the presence of decomposed brake hose rubber and fluid chemistry changes. Check the automatic trans dipstick for burnt smell or discoloration. Check operation of mirrors, windows, door locks, and other equipment. Good Luck!!

You might want to check autocheck.com with the VIN also. Sometimes stuff show up on one and not the other.
