  1. Back in the early eighties I went to an auction with a dealer friend because ordinary people couldn’t get in. But anyway, I believe it was ’84 and I was able to get a ’79 Buick Regal Turbo for $1600 and it lasted for at least 5 or 6 years, I not sure, my ex kept the car.

Drawbacks are, at least where I went in Denver, you weren’t able to hear them run until they get to the auction floor. You can open the hood and usually see if they leak anything because they are not detailed. You check the inside, and wait until something you liked comes by, you can listen to it, and talk to the driver about how it feels. Set yourself a limit and know that if the car is decent the dealers want it.

One last thing, this auction had three drive through bays I forget the colors but they go from the lower expected bidding up to the highest bidding, like a year old Corvette, in cherry condition can be gotten for maybe $10,000.

  2. Well, you can try it, but I would recommend against attempting to compete with all the dealers at these auctions.

Chances are, they’ve already inspected all the cars and are set to pay top dollar for them.

Personally, I wouldn’t try it myself. I figure I’ve got a much better chance of getting a good deal on craigslist than I would be able to get at an auction.
