If you buy a used car, do you need to do any additional paperwork to transfer warranty to the new owner?
7th June 2011
How do you transfer warranty on a used car or does it just happen automaticly?
This is for a 2005 vehicle which still has manufacter warranty left and is a private sale (not through a dealership).

Not normally for manufactuer warranty, years ago you did and had to pay a fee.
I’d suggest to contact the manufacturer just to make sure.
Also, some warranties are only valid with the original owner, such as a few years ago Mitsubishi extended the warranty on their vehicles but the extension was only valid with the original owner. The car still retained the 3/36 warranty regardless of owner but the warranty extension wasn’t.
Best to double check.

Let your finance manager handle this. A lot of times you have to contact the original manufacture. There might be a transfer fee. Sometimes you cannot transfer the warranty you have to find out if it is transferable.

That depends on what kind of warranty…
Is it a new car warranty?…(original manufacturer)
Is it a after market used car warranty?
You do not have to do anything usually with a new car warranty (original manufacturer)
If it is a used car warranty (after market) you will have to transfer IF the warrant yis even transferable…not all after market warranties are….you should read your warranty documents and/or call the warranty company
