Ive bought lots of cars from auctions. Mostly dealer only but some public auctions.

As with anything, you can get a good deal or you can overpay for a piece of crap.

If you don't know what you are doing, you could be the only one bidding on a car, and you bid yourself higher & higher.

Many of the auctions open to the public have real problem cars that are sold as is so you don't know what you've bought until you've bought it.

A few dealers will take some decent cars there but they will want almost retail for them.

Don't bid on any car you don't drive first. If you cant drive it, don't bid on it. You could be looking at ALL kind of problems.

Ive seen lots of clueless buyers buy pieces of crap at auction. The auction has a person usher the buyer inside to pay for it before they realize what they just bought.

That said, buying any lower priced car is taking a chance in itself. But at least you can drive it, have it checked by a mechanic or whatever if you want.

Its a roll of the dice. But when I was in the business, I went to auctions 2-3 times a week. A newbie doesn't have that kind of experience. He doesn't know when he is bidding against a light post or a shill bidder.

If you are a gambling type, you might give it a shot. It could save you some money or you could end up with a headache.

You can go & watch & learn for free. I did that for months before I got the nerve up to buy anything.

Going to a car auction is a good idea, as long as you know what you're doing. If not, just bring a mechanic with you. That way you'll know if there is something really wrong with the car you're interested in and how much it will cost you.

I've bought 2 cars from auctions in the past with out any real problems. I'd say go for it!

Auctions are an interesting place...you can get some way good deals on them, but most of the really good ones are for dealers only. I lived in San Diego and we wold go to the ones by the mexico border a lot and they had some good deals, but there is no guarentee on anything.

Carfax cant be trusted either anymore...I worked at a scum bag dealership that would take in totalled cars, he would fix them in his shop, and sell them all before it hit carfax. If you buy from a dealership, make sure its a reputable place.
