I am looking to buy a used car but when I test drove it I saw the check engine light was on and the speedometer was broken. Other than that, the car runs well. My concern is that the odometer might have been tampered with. Is there a connection between the speedometer and odometer? Is it a good idea for me to purchase the car?

  1. Obviously none of the answerers have had a broken speedometer before. The speedometer, in most cases, will not affect the odometer (which counts your mileage)

Anyone can swap out the cluster and clear the check engine light as well – it looks like the seller is leaving the vehicle how it is to be honest about what it needs which is rare. See what that check engine light is reading and have a mechanic check it out as well. When you drive it make sure the odometer is still turning. You can replace the cluster or just hook up GPS in it.

  2. Yes there will be an odometer discrepancy.
    Check engine light RED FLAG
Take it to a local qualified reputable mechanic and have him/her inspect vehicle first. If owner will not allow this then pass the vehicle up and go on to another

  3. Yes, it is a bad sign. The true mileage may not be correct.See if the odometer works when you drive it. Plus the engine light!!! My opinion on this.. If it has obvious problems…walk away, .if they will not let me keep it overnight, drive it for several hundred miles and take it to my own mechanic then I will pass on the car. Plus always check the true market value (link below). good luck

  4. Find another car to buy. You have no idea how many miles are really on the vehicle.
