I am looking to buy a used car and I wanted to get a vehicle history report. All of the sites I found say you can get a free report but when you log in the only information thats given to you is the cars descrption. Then they ask you to pay up to for a complete report. Do you know how I can get this report without paying a fee?

  1. Most dealers will pull a CarFax report on request at no charge for a vehicle that they are selling. Most have a fixed price subscription to CarFax.

Keep in mind that YOU must pay for a CarFax report yourself in order to be covered by their guarantee. The dealer’s freebie will NOT cover you.

  3. No. I did a lot of looking but only found those sites that give obvious info and ask you to pay for the rest. I would be curious whether anyone found a good site but am not getting my hopes up.

  5. When I bought my last car, I told the dealer I would not buy the vehicle without a complete carfax report and he printed it.

  6. There are several sources for car history
    - State DMVs. Very slow to respond. They only have details on registrations and brands – when a car has major damage a brand is added. Also, they will only have data for one state – if the car has moved they can’t help you. Fees vary by state.

The best source is Carfax. They collect data from over 8000 sources – and still they don’t have everything. However, it’s the most comprehensive source.

For free – since it costs the DMVs and Carfax – nobody provides it for free.

When dealers buy Carfax reports they pay a price that allows them to redistribute the report – so ask the dealer. You’ll find thousands for free on Cars and AutoTrader.
