I am considering purchasing a used car. I want an economical, sporty car with good gas mileage. I am 6’2" tall so leg room is important. Comments from other owners will be greatly appreciated.

  1. It is a Toyota. They hold their value well. They also cut a lot of corners to make it so cheap as Tony said.

My 05 tC spent another week at the dealer getting fixed again. Its a 5 speed with the TRD SC. I would suggest getting the extended warranty. Mine was totally trouble free until about 30k miles. Since then I’ve blown 2 radiators, 1 radiator cap, and 1 supercharger. Its now got 52k miles. So far all has been covered under warranty even the rental cars.

FYI the supercharger was redesigned and I have heard the problems involving broken brackets have been eliminated. I don’t know about the seals though.

  2. You’re better off buying the tC brand spanking new, but be warned, the car makes more weird noises than a teen-aged punk band, and the interior scratches VERY easily. Also at your height, you may want to test drive the car to make sure leg room isn’t an issue. I’m about 5’11, and I have the seats all the way back. My 2007 tC is a manual which of course plays a major factor. Best of luck!

To add to what blankpages said: The Scion tC is ABSOLUTLEY a Toyota! It has the same (extremely reliable) 2.4L engine as the 4 cylinder Camry. So needless to say, it will last a long time. The annoying whistling sound that you hear at 2500 or so RPM is the air intake. Toyota Execs thought it would be ‘cool’ to make the Scion tC sound as if it’s equipped with a cold air intake system.

  3. I’m 6’4" and once rented a tC. I didn’t notice any real bad problems, though I don’t think I’d buy one, simply because of my size.

  4. The scion tC is a roomy car, being that I am 5’9” I had no problem but you are quite tall. The ceiling in the car is a little low, and becuase of the moonroof you might actually be uncomfortable considering the way its made (its really close to my head so it might actually hit yours) As far as mechanically, nothing went wrong with the car it ran great for a very long time, but after about 5-6 months of ownership i had to get new break pads (which is a well known fact that the way tC’s brake is horrifying) and I was told by many mechanics that they aren’t toyotas, they will not be lasting cars and run forever like camrys or corrollas. Gas mileage also varies during the daily commute. Also, something that could be annoying, when on the highway going speeds above 55 mph, you will hear a rather loud whisteling sound. ALL tC’s do this according to my research when i first bought the car, so if you can’t live with that or if the 160 watt stock stereo isn’t loud enough, that could be a problem.
I bought the limited edition scion release series 3.0 tc, and when i finally sold it back i got 16 grand for it when it cost me 23.
    Bottom Line:
The car has better acceleration than my old v6 mustang (which had 40 more horsepower) so sporty is what you’ll definantly get.
The sunroof might be a problem.
The tC isn’t predicted to last as long or be as reliable as a camry or a corrolla.
The whirring bee sound on the highway is annoying.
Brakes/ brake system is a little scary until you learn to compensate.
The value of the car depreciates quickly!
If you buy it from scion there will be no haggling, good or bad depending on you…
There has been recalls on some things with all scions, definantly check out the scion message boards for more information!

  5. its reliable and the engine is good (same inline 4 from the camry). i’m 6” and i fit it in fine. the only problem i ever had was rattling, however some dynomat and a screwdriver took care of everything. it’ll run forever, looks nice, and its pretty easy to modify.
