Ok, I planned on getting an ls400 and it didn’t work out. I ended seeing an ad for a Caprice with the police package in it and I bought the next week (the ad can be seen at http://fayetteville.craigslist.org/cto/1470762700.html) This car has a lot of power, and came with some new parts and inspection. Gas wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought. It had a quarter tank when it was dropped off at my house and was as close to E as it could get before I got to actually drive it. I put in it and the needle was trying to pass the F when I turned the car on. But aside from it being a great first car it has two problems. One the battery drains out over night and needs to be charged every 3 days (I believe its coming from the radio because the display stays on even if the radio and car is cut off). Problem number Two is when I drive it at about 25mph and up it has this wobbly feeling like the car shifting at the smallest bumps and humps on the road (The car came with a set of brand new tires, spare, and flare sticks lol). If there are any chevy, caprice, police car experts out there that might be able to give an input on the problems it would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. I read on an online article and watch a news coverage about police cars and that you can take your former police car to a department or auction for it to get serviced or you can ask them for parts for the car and it would be cheaper than going to a dealer or a private mechanic; is this true?

  1. Lol, I worked on these cars when they were brand new (Actually the cop cars were some of the verry first cars i ever worked on). The shaking could be from a broken belt in the tire,, especially at 25 mph. Just cause the man said theyre new and thet have alot of tread does not mean the steel belt inside isnt broken. I learned a long time ago just because someone said they were new, doesent mean they do what theyre sposed to. Unless you seen them get installed, i would rule out them being new tires.

As far as the battery dying every 3 days, the radio display could NOT do that. You have an open circuit somewhere or a door jam switch stuck to the on position. Alot of old cop cars eliminate the interior light turning on with the door so they can be and i quote from a cop himself "Stealthy at night". They usually have an added on dome light with a button they can turn on at theyre leisure as needed. Beign as the interior light may never turn on, you would never know if the switch is actually bad as if it was, the light would be on, but even if it isnt, it’s drawing voltage to complete relays to the other door switches (which probly work) Usually it’s the driver door as cops dont typically carry many passengers. Thats what id look at first, If the problem presists, unplug your battery at night as charging it with a battery charger too many times will cause your battery to sulfate (go bad). Also could be a bad cell in the battery, that could cause it to drain every few days.

  2. as for the battery drain, it is most likely from the radio, unless there is another short. try taking out the fuse to the radio. but watch as this fuse may supply power to other things like your horn, cig lighter, or interior lights.
since you just got the car, go and get a computer alignment. this may solve your wobbling problem, it may also need tie rod ends, or other suspension components.

not sure if a dept will do it. i know around here most local departments take them to shops just like everyone else.
