Don’t you hate when you are driving along and a jerk cuts you off, or you end up behind someone who is going ten miles under the posted speed limit? Or maybe you are just tired of those pedestrians who like to think they can jay walk across the street, or take too long crossing an intersection? You have probably thought to yourself, “I wish there was some way I could just scare the be-Jesus out of these people.” Well there is, and you can. It is called installing a train horn in your vehicle. No more giving people the finger, or yelling at them through the windshield of your car, one blast from a train horn can do the trick for you, and so much more. Before you just run out and grab one and install it, there are some things you need to know.

Although this should be obvious, you should know that that train horns are very LOUD. If you have never heard one, you might be surprised. They are so loud it might even pose problems for you if your horn exceeds the allowable noise limits. So before you risk being pulled over by the cops for making excessive noise, check with your local DMV to see what the noise ordinances are where you live. You may even want to go as far as calling your sheriff’s office or police department just to make sure you would not be breaking any other laws by installing a train horn.

You may be surprised to find out what a wide range is available when it comes to train horns. For example, you could buy one driven by compressed air or one powered by electricity. Some of these horns can be installed in the engine compartment and hidden from view by the hood of your car. Other horns are so huge they must be mounted someplace on your car or truck. You want to look into the various horns that are available and the pros and cons of each type.

Don’t forget to consider how you will install your train horn, or the price you will have to pay. These horns are costly no matter where you buy them. Expect to pay from a few hundred dollars up to several hundred dollars depending upon the type of horn you want. Installing them is a lot different from installing a traditional car horn. Those can be put in easily by mounting the horn on your fire wall and connecting it to the electrical system. Train horns are trickier than that. In fact, they should only be installed by someone who knows what they are doing. Professional installation may cost more but it is worth it. There would be nothing worse than to spend big bucks for your train horn and then have it destroyed because it was not installed properly.

If you have decided you are ready to buy a train horn, you will be pleased to find out that they are easy to find at both local retailers and on the internet. Since they are fairly expensive, you probably want to do some comparison shopping to make sure you get the best deal for your money. Don’t forget to factor in the cost of shipping, taxes, and any other expenses such as installation. With a little shopping around, you can find a train horn that’s just right for you.

Yves B. Geller penned this story. He is mainly a car enthusiast but he shows his passion for cars through vehicle customization. He offers train horns to car, truck and boat owners but he is a firm believer that an air horn should be used responsibly.
