Looking at buying a loaded 08 nissan altima. On the invoice I see a transportation fee of 5 and a dealer fee of 9. What are these fees for and should I be paying them if this is a used car?

  1. Did you tell car max to ship it to your location ?

Lots of dealers have doc fees ranging from $49-499.

Ive never seen an "invoice" for a used car.

  2. I should think not. Dealer fees usually have to do with all the state title & plate app fees. But that trans fee is totally bogus. Never heard of such. Go buy elsewhere if they cannot justify it.

  3. Normally the transportation fee is for new vehicles only, and the dealer fee may be for dealer prep, which again is usually for new vehicles, not used…………ask the dealer why they are there

  4. Transportation fee???? Where did they deliver the car from, Russia????? If you found the car on their lot, then you don’t need to pay any transportation fee. Refuse to pay it.

As for the $329, it may be documentation fee. In California, it is capped at $45, but unfortunately other states have not followed suit. I would negotiate it down to something reasonable or none at all.

It really depends on how much you want this car.

  5. Dealer fees are mandatory. The transportation fee looks like pure profit.

You can always try to negotiate your way around those fees.

Transportation fees should be the cost of getting the car to the dealership. Dealer fees are what they charge you for processing the paperwork. It pays the title clerks salary.
