Should I call the cops before I repossess my car that the buyer has stopped making payments on?
17th December 2010
The buyer broke the contract and didn’t make is monthly payment of 0. He keeps making up excuses to postpone the payment and I’m tired of it. I have the keys and title and know where the car is parked. Just curious if I need to notify the police before I take my car back?

This is not an issue for law enforcement because the car is not stolen and you are not sealing it merely exercising your contractual right to take possession of the collateral in the event of default.

The Repo man doesn’t call the cops, He just takes it and he doesn’t care if you are standing right there…

I hope you have a proper written contract that spells out all the terms. if not you might get in trouble.
I watched a repo show once and called the police after they had taken the car.
If you do, you better hide the car because he has a key too.
It is always a bad idea to sell a car that way, you have learned..

you should just to let them know the situation so that Joe Bum doesn’t call them and try to play it like you’re stealing "his" car.

As this would be considered a "Civil" matter, the police would not be involved unless you trespass to recover the vehicle. Another example of why NOT to sell on payments. BTW "N" is wrong.

Its considered a courtesy to call the police AFTER you repo it so in case the deadbeat reports it stolen, they don’t have to waste time on it.
The cops aren’t going to help you repo it. And most states, if the buyer says "you cant take my car" you cant. Its "peaceful" repo only.
