   The reality is is if she had stayed there might have come a time where she and Picard would face some similar dangerous situation such as that one.

   For Picard, it may be that he may be unable to order into such a situation again, unhealthy for their relationship, and fairly damaging for her career as an Officer.

    I think he could have had the relationship and it wouldn’t have had to have a big impact on the series, with guest appearances by the actrice.

    She would have had to give up her command but no ship sees more interesting things then the Enterprise. There would still be enough for her to do on the ship as a civilian researcher. .

    Sure it would make captain picard less then perfect as a captain but more human.
