Can a good used car inspection by a good mechanic find problems that might arise months after buying?

I was just wondering because my friend bought a used car that had many problems. He ended up selling the car and bought a new car instead. I was just wondering, if he spent that or so for a mechanic to inspect the used car before buying, could he have saved himself lots of money and time at the auto shop?
