Make Your Own Biodiesel

11th July 2009

Did you know that biodiesel is the most tested, highly approved and fasted growing alternative fuel in the world?? Biodiesel is an easy to make, reusable fuel source, that can be used in any diesel engine. The process of making biodiesel is done by mixing vegetable oil with methanol and lye, then modifying the mix by using a biodiesel processor!!

One of the great things about using biodiesel is that you’ll be helping both the environment and the agricultural community. Also biodiesel is much better for your car’s engine and own personal health. What’s more, you can make your own biodiesel and biodiesel processor from the comfort of your home. Everyone from advanced scientists, to your average Joes are taking notice of the countless benefits of making homemade biodiesel

Why is biodiesel better for your car’s engine than regular diesel?? Using biodiesel fuel will help you save money on maintenance and increase the live of you cars engine. This is because it is burns cleaner, and has stronger lubricating properties than regular diesel. Unlike other fuels, biodiesel also produces a pleasant smell, which some people say is similar to popcorn

It well known that regular diesel fumes are more harmful to both the environment and your own personal health!! However, it has been proven that biodiesel is clean burning, and organically made, so you’ll no longer have to worry about health risks, or damaging the ozone layer…

Did you know that by making your own biodiesel you can reduce your fuel costs to as little as 50 cents a gallon?? When starting out it’s always best to begin by making a few test batches. The more familiar you become with the process the easier it gets

To make a successful test batch of you need to make certain you are using the correct mixture of lye!! If you are using unused vegetable oil then you need to use 4 grams of lye. And if you are using used vegetable oil you need to use 6 grams of lye. You can start out making test batches using a simple blender.

Before you start you need to make sure you’re wearing appropriate safety gear, this includes goggles and thick gloves. This mixture can get very hot, so make your using a big solid mixing bowl!! The first step is to add your lye and methanol bit at a time, then mix until the lye has dissolved. This will create a substance known as methoxide!! Next you need to preheat the vegetable oil and add it to the methoxide, then mix. Pour the mixture into the blender for 30 mins, and run the blender on slow. Allow this mixture to sit for 24 hours!! Once complete you should see thin liquid on the top and thick liquid on the bottom. If not its usually because you have to much lye or not enough

Making your own homemade biodiesel takes some practice, but once you’ve mastered the skill it can be very helpful. The knowledge you learn from making homemade biodiesel can be used to teach friends and family, or even make some additional money on the side. Who knows, eventually you might be able to start your own biodiesel business!!
