What to look for (or avoid) when buying a used car?

I need a reliable used car, but I have no experience or knowledge when it comes to the internal workings of a car, so I need help.
What should I look for in a used car to know that it won’t break down on me next week? What should I avoid? What price ranges are ideal for a good used car?
