I want to buy a used 2003 Mazda Protege ES, what details should I look into? I don’t want a bad problematic car. It has about 80,000 miles.

My husband’s car engine dies last week, and we have been trying to find an affordable used replacement engine. It’s a 2005 Mazda 6, and the engines have ranged in price from 00 to 00 for the same mileage. Is it like other things where you get what you pay for as far as quality goes?

My mother is planning on buying a used car. Her budget is about 5000. I do not have any great suggestions. She wants something small to midsize. She has already checked out a 1998 corolla with 68,000 miles and a 2002 mazda protege. Any other suggestions? I was curious if the ford focus might be a good choice. Thanks yahoo
