Why New And Used RV Travel Is Becoming More Popular
31st May 2010
RV travel is expected to be on the rise this summer. A number of factors are adding up to see Americans enjoying their time off in RVs as opposed to hotels. Over 8.2 million households own an RV reports RVIA. With prices of hotel and airfare seeming excessive to many travelers, RVing and camping are quickly taking the place of overseas vacations.
RVIA found that close to half of current used and new RV owners are planning on traveling more by RV this year than last year. Those that have tasted the RV lifestyle get hooked. Many times people are exposed to RV travel as kids on family vacations. Those experiences are memories people want to recreate with their own families and friends.
If you own an RV, why wouldn’t you travel with it? Every time you get out in your RV, you’re paying off an investment. Each trip becomes less and less expensive. If you calculate the cost of purchasing or renting an RV into each subsequent vacation, you end up saving more and more money. Not to mention, there’s always a vacation on wheels waiting in your driveway. You get to bring all the comforts of home and eat the way you like when you like. You don’t have to worry about expensive room service or eating out every night. Families have just as much fun cooking over a campfire as they do at a restaurant.
The reasons behind increased RV travel? Cost is the biggest. Traveling by new or used motorhome can result in savings over traditional forms of travel including airfare, hotel stays and eating out. Being able to get out and explore or pick up and go at will is another big draw, especially for those spending extended periods of time on the road.
RV enthusiasts get out more when they travel by RV and tend to be more physically engaged with the environment than with other vacations. This may be that their destinations are National Parks and are ripe for walking, biking and climbing.
Baby boomers are retiring and buying an RV is one way to get out and explore in a way they weren’t able to when they were tied to a forty hour a week job. People who have been laid off are getting out more as well and spending their time exploring the outdoors. Trails are packed with people checking off life-list opportunities while they can.
Campgrounds are preparing for an influx of visitors this summer. They are offering eco-friendly accommodations as well as recreation for all ages of family members. Campgrounds today offer fishing on premises, golf courses, games for kids, exercise rooms and more.
RV rentals will start picking up soon as will sales. So head out to your nearest RV dealer. There are thousands of new and used RVs awaiting adventurers. Pack your bags and start exploring the world around you.

RV Sales Affected by Eco-Technology
14th May 2010
RVs are more and more commonly becoming outfitted with the latest environmentally friendly technology and it’s translating into improved RV sales. Solar panels are not yet a common sight on RVs, but are quickly associated with them in regards to a green RV. The biggest catch to the craze on solar panels is how expensive they are.
While the expense of solar panels has been their biggest deterrent, solar panels are finally growing up. The reason behind the cost of solar panels is the ingredients. Platinum is not a cheap product to use and until now, no better substitute could be found. However, UQUAM has been working on it. Their new technology might see a lot more solar panels flying off the shelf.
Traditional solar panels are made with platinum, which is a costly material. This is one reason, even with increased demand that prices haven’t dropped significantly since solar panels were introduced. The other issue, reports Ben Coxworth in his article Breakthrough in Low Cost Efficient Solar Cells, is problems with passage of light through the dark coating.
Ben Coxworth’s article, Breakthrough in Low Cost Efficient Solar Cells, explains the new materials being employed and how even the coating on solar panels is being updated with a new lighter liquid/gel that is more resistant to aging than traditional electrolytes.
The solar panels aren’t available to consumers, yet. Being able to offer eco-friendly accessories for RVs is only going to increase RV sales. While lightweight trailers and pop-ups have been appealing to the younger, greener generation, so are ways to maintain an environmentally friendly trailer.
Solar panels aren’t the only things greening the RV industry. Even the simple things are having a big effect, such as LED lighting. LED lights have become popular with RV travelers because less money is spent on energy bills and they have a longer life than regular light bulbs. Manufacturers are making it easy for RV owners to replace regular light bulbs by designing fixtures that are aimed at RVs.
Pouring vegetable oil into your RV may sound insane, but RVs can run on biodiesel. The catch is, RVs do have to retrofitted to take the biofuel. Without it, you might have a disaster on your hands. Kits are out there that teach RV owners how to convert their vehicles, or professionals can install the biodiesel kit for you. On the road, you may get to know some interesting people as you fill up at a local restaurant instead of gas station. Regular diesel is still needed for ignition, but after you get moving, it’s a quick switch over to biodiesel.
RV sales are benefiting from helping the earth. The more they green their practices, the wider possible consumer base they have access to.
