Making Dirt Bike Riding Safe For Your Child
3rd July 2010
The thrill and excitement of dirt bike riding makes it a dream for most kids, and they would love to own their own bikes.
But, before running out and buying a new bike, there are some things to consider that will help keep your child safe and help them to have a fantastic riding experience.
The first thing to look at is the age of your kid. In the past, many bikes were built for older children in mind, but recently many designers have been making bikes for younger ones as well. Making sure the bike is appropriate for your child’s age is incredibly important.
Next, think about the size of the bike in comparison to the size and weight of your child as well. While it is common to buy children things that are a little big so they can grow into them, dirt bikes should be the right size, and not too big or too small.
A dirt bike is used in places where there are a lot of bumps and holes, and the uneven terrain can cause the kid to move around too much. Make sure that you find a bike that is appropriate for the height and weight of your child.
Another factor worth seriously thinking about is the experience and skill level of your child in terms of dirt bike riding. While most kids learn as they go, it may be worth it to provide some training in the beginning. This way they can learn how to handle the bike with more confidence before going out on their own, and they will be safer because of it.
You can train them yourself, or have someone else who is knowledgeable is fine, as long as they get the right help until they can do well on their own. With older kids, generally they do fine making their own mistakes, and they learn quickly too.
Finally, make sure that they are protected with a helmet and protective padding at all times. This greatly reduces the risk of serious injury when an accident does happen.
