Slam locks are, as the name might suggest, a form of locks that causes a vehicle door to lock when it is closed. It will not then reopen until the right key is used. The automatic nature of slam locks means that locking up when the driver leaves the vehicle isn’t something that can be forgotten, thus improving the overall security of a vehicle.

Cargo crime is costing a fortune in the European Union. The EU’s statistics tells us that European businesses are being hit with a bill of eight and a half billion Euros every single year. Many of the offences taking place on the roads of Europe are being carried out by criminal gangs who are well organised and know the transport routes well.

Commercial freight vehicles are an appealing target for criminals. This is down to the fact that accessing vehicles on the roads is comparatively easy and they are often carrying a lot of merchandise with an extremely high value. Drivers should also be taking regular breaks on the road and some even have to sleep in their vehicles, making them an easier target still.

Because a slam lock forces the door to lock every single time a driver closes it, the human error element can be removed. There are countless instances of cargo crime offences that take place when a driver simply forgets to lock his door when leaving the vehicle at services etc.

This type of locking solution is probably really a minimum requirement in order to minimise the risk of theft from a commercial transporting vehicle. There are now so many other advanced security measures on the market, such as alarm systems and immobilisers and they’re all there with to protect against the very real threat of cargo crime. It seems, to a degree, almost unfair that a company or individual should have to invest so heavily just to prevent criminals from striking, but with the potential cost of a theft from a transport vehicle, it’s often money well spent.
