I’m looking to buy a used car here in California. A lot of people tell me to avoid dealers because of taxes and other fees, but about how much more will that add if I’m buying say a Toyota Corolla at around 11,000-12,000?

And also, if I look to buy from a dealer how can I negotiate the price? Or can I? Any tips to getting a good deal when buying from a used car dealership?

  1. Go to Kelly Blue Book and find out the retail cost of the car along with trade in value. If you get the price in between you will be fine. Yes you can negotiate the price at the dealers. The fee’s (tax, license etc) should be around 11% max, the tax is calculated on your home resident in california.

  2. You can not get out of paying taxes. If you buy from a private party you will still have to sale tax when you get your license plates. NO, you can not negotiate sales tax. NO, the law clearly states once you charge 1 person the amount you must charge them all the same otherwise they leave themselves open for discrimination problems. Just tell them to reduce the price to cover their fee’s. If you are talking about a $12,000 new car. NOPE. They are making about $100 on the car and will have to pay a salesman $200 just for selling it. They do have overhead.
