Just a couple of months back, my neighbour who I was on great terms with, bought my old car. It was not my idea to sell my old car to my neighbour; in fact it was him who approached me to find out what I was doing with this car when he saw I had bought a new one.

Not only was he my neighbour but I would have also considered him a friend because we used to chat down the local pub and our wives were very friendly with each other too. When he suggested that he buy my old car it seemed like the ideal solution. The fact that I would not have any hassle trying to sell the car made up for the fact that he was offering me less than I had planned to sell the car for. Once we shook hands however, the problems started.

On the evening that this neighbour had bought the car we had a long phone call with him asking all types of odd questions. From that point I realised that I had made a big mistake selling the car to this man. Some of the questions he was putting to me made it seem as though he felt I had swindled him out of money. I was a bit annoyed with this and the call ended with me telling him that he could have the money back if he brought back the car; to which he replied by slamming the phone down. I am not a car salesman and have never sold a car before but I really thought that once you had sold the car, that was it.

I then heard from another friend of mine that my neighbour was spreading nasty lies around about me. He was telling everyone that would listen that I had cheated him out of a lot of money for a used car that was a piece of junk. However he denied it all when I approached him about it. Since then we have not spoken to each other at all and my poor wife is being ignored by his wife. So take my advice – do not sell a used car to anyone who you consider to be a friend.
