What are some tips on buying a used car?
17th March 2011
I’m 21 and am in need of a used car to get to and from work and school. I can only afford something between 00 and 00. Any advice on how to get a good deal, haggle a price, and most importantly how to know if there’s anything wrong with the car?=

Look for a small car that is good on gas and is reliable.
Never pay the sticker price. Never give the dealer a price first, always come back with a counter offer when they give their price. Take a few seconds to thinks after each exchange.
When you cant get the price down any lower start asking for things like repairs that the car needs.
Never say things like "I really like that car." Let the dealer know you are willing to check out other lots.
The best thing you can do to find out if the car is in good shape is ask for the car-fax. It will give you some idea what is going on with the car. Another thing you could do is take it to your mechanic and have it checked out.

1. ALWAYS bring someone more knowledgeable about cars with you when you go look at the car. NEVER go alone because you need a 2nd opinion on if it is a good deal or not.
2. When you see the add in the paper or whatever, go online and find out what that type of car goes for and what its most common problems are so you know what specifically to check out when you see it.
3. Ask up front if you can take it and have someone look at it for you before you make an offer. A legit seller will let you bring someone/take it to someone to have it looked over. Be ready to leave your drivers license or passport. Call around to shops around your area and see if one of them would be willing to look a car over for a reasonable price.

My son is a Toyota / Lexus mechanic. I would pay the $20 for a CarFax report to make sure it’s never been in a major accident / event. And look at the "pink slip" and make sure it doesn’t have "salvaged" stamped across it. That means it was "totaled" and then sold after being totaled.
And take some of that cash to pay for a reliable mechanic to go over the car and give you an opinion about the soundness of the vehicle. Oh and make sure before you close the deal that there’s not going to be a problem getting it registered in your name. For instance, does the seller have the paperwork in order to sell it? Does it need a smog certificate and if so, will it pass without having to spend money on equipment to pass smog.
Get the maintenance records on the car so you can see how it was cared for.
Good luck. There’s a lot of nice used cars out there because these imports last so long nowadays.

Best to have a friend or even a local mechanic look it over if possible if you your self don,t know allot about mechanics

First of all, ask for "CARFAX …don’t buy a lemon." Use your poker face when you "GOTTA HAVE THAT CAR!" Yes, haggle, don’t be afraid to walk off and say you’re also looking at a nice ride at another dealer’s.
Also, not to seem old fashioned, but if you’re a female, it’s always a good idea to take a guy with you who knows cars. Salesmen just don’t take us females seriously and will try every trick in the book if they can (they are generally of the lowest form of life.)

As they say on tv…get the car fax. There are a couple of sites on the internet where you can type in the VIN and see if the car has ever been wrecked. At those same sites you can see what that model typically sells for.

You also should compare car insurance quotes for cars before buying one, for example here – carinsurance.yoll.net
