What are things to look for when buying a used car?
26th January 2011
I am going to be buying two used cars, none picked out yet. I am looking for some advice on things to look at or consider. We have been ripped off before and I have learned a few things but still would like to know more. How do you buy a good used car?

Find a car, find out from your banker what the car is worth, considering condition, mileage, etc. and have the car checked out by a mechanic.

Its the same as buying anything else thats used.
1. Make sure it works or at least that you know how to fix it if you are looking for something cheaper.
2. Find out how much similar cars in your area are being sold for. NADA, KBB, Craigs List, local papers are all good places to look.

There is no fail proof way to buy a good used car. Your best bet is to buy it from a reputable company who provides a warranty. If you are buying a late model car, it can be more difficult. I always ask for a carfax if from a dealer which is not always fail proof but still good. I look at the car to see if the paint matches on all body panels. If one is a little different colored or faded, you know it has had some type body work. I also look under the hood to see if there is lots of dirt and oil on the engine block. If there is you can tell it has not been well maitained. If buying from an individual you can tell by looking at the interior, if the tires all match etc. to see if this is a person who cares how their car looks and probably takes care of it. Good luck!!!

First of all pull up a CARFAX report. This will give you accident information on the vehicle. If the car has an accident it may be prone to more issues and the car will not ride well. Resell values on crashed cars are thousands less than clean cars so avoid cars with accidents. Secondly for safety reasons I would choose a car with side airbags and ESC. These are life saving options that can be found in cars as early as 2006. If your budget does not allow you to buy a car with both ESC and side airbags try to get one or the other. Make sure the car has a reasonable amount of miles. A good rule of thumb is to buy a car with less than 100k miles. Though lots of Japanese brands, European brands and a few of American brands will last longer than that, even the most reliable brands may have problems. You also should try to get a car that has up to date service records.
These few tips will make a difference when you are trying to choose a good car. Toyotas, Hondas and a few Euro brands are good quality so I would recommend these brands when choosing a car Hope I helped.

Be sure that the car is still working, check the mileage of the cars and check the oils, and stuffs to repair, if you are looking for something cheap. just be sure that the car is in good condition, and have a guarantee to the dealer that he or she will help you to the car repair. or car modifications.
