What is a good mileage to buy a used car with?
21st April 2011
I’m planning on buying a used car and I need help. And American cars vs Japanese cars vs Europeans cars, which are better, last longer. I need a car to last me more than 5 years.
I want to spend max 00 an mi 00.

Don’t like American cars. Japanese ones are okay. Euro diesels are good – keep mileage under 80k as they have major services at about 100k. Will last 200k+ though given the TLC and regular servicing/MOT tests

It really depends on the kind of car and how well the owner took care of it. From my friends experiences, American cars dont seem to hold up well once they have 80k on them or more.
I purchased a Mitsubishi Mirage with 111k on it 3 years ago and it’s still going strong.
edit: It currently has about 134k on it

How much are you going to spend?
Japanese – most reliable under any circumstance.
American – not as reliable, but fairly cheap to repair.
European – depends on what you get, but either way… will be the most expensive to own.

Generally Japanese cars have a better reliability history than either American or European, although European has by far the worst. Recently, though, Ford cars have gained worldwide recognition as one of the top makes as far as quality and reliability. Ford and Honda are now considered to be the best overall makes. I suggest you look into Ford Focus, Honda Civic, or Ford Fiesta.

And what would mileage tell you?
It only tells you how far a car has gone. Not how it was maintained.
I’ve happily bought cars with 250,000 miles and more. Because mileage doesn’t tell you a F—ing thing when it comes to what shape the car is in.
If you want the car to last, maintain it. The car can’t do that on it’s own. If it falls apart, it’s because you didn’t take care of it. Not because it reached a magical mile marker, and self-destructed.
Seriously. Think about how ridiculous that sounds, and you’ll understand why your question is silly.
