I have a 04 Ford explorer Eddie Baurer edition. I took it in to a honda dealership and they said that the car was worth 00 because its 2WD. The dealership would put us into a older car but we really didn’t want that. Now would a used car lot do the same?

  1. On a $7500 car, you are going to lose at least $1500 on a trade. Because the dealer is going to sell to you at retail and give you wholesale for your trade.

They have no incentive to trade you for another car that is worth the same as yours. They are in business to make money, not spin their wheels.

  2. yes. You are trying to swap a 7500 ride. They will give you a 7500 car.

The difference is, the number for your car is wholesale. The number for their car is retail.

Sell the Explorer outright. You might get more than 7500 that way. Then go buy the next car with cash. You will be better off.

  3. My relative sells 2004 4 wheel drive/ all wheel drive Ford explorer’s all the time for between $4000 and $5000 . with &5000 to 140,000 miles
I checked KBB for trade in value of yours and came up with $6975 figuring average mileage of 75000. There is no allowance for being an Eddie Bauer , the only time that option is worth money is when it is new, so the money you spend for the Eddie Bauer Edition option just disappears when you drive it off the lot.
Back to your vehicle, probably the most you would get trade in at his lot would be $2000 since it is a 2 wheel drive. $2000 will not get you much of a car and you would stilll have to pay sales tax, filing fees ,etc.
Sell it yourself and be happy getting $2000 to $4000 for it.
SUV’s still are not very popular and the people wanting them want 4 wheel drive.

  4. I have several family members that are in car sales. It could happen, but there has to be something in it for car dealership or they are going to say it is a no go.

Here are a few links that should help:
